Inspection / Repair - Valve Guide / Valve Seat

B2-76prose procedure

Replacement of valve guide (continued)

  1. 4
Tap the valve guide in from the side opposite the combustion chamber until the SST contacts the cylinder head.
Line drawing of tapping the valve guide in from the side opposite the combustion chamber using the SST until it contacts the cylinder head; SST parts labelled 49 L012 003, 49 L012 004 and 49 L012 002.
  2. 5
Verify that the valve guide projection height is within the specification. (Refer to page B2-75.)
  3. 6
    If not, repeat steps 2-4.

Valve Seat

  1. 1
Inspect the contact surface of each valve seat and valve face for the following: (1) Roughness; (2) Damage.
  2. 2
If necessary, resurface the valve seat by using a 45° valve seat cutter and/or resurface the valve face.
Line drawing of resurfacing a valve seat in the cylinder head combustion chamber using a 45° valve seat cutter.
  3. 3
Apply a thin coat of Prussian blue to the valve face.
Line drawing of checking valve seating: a cross-section of the valve seated against the cylinder head seat (left), and two valve heads showing the Prussian-blue contact pattern around the valve face (right).
  4. 4
Check the valve seating by pressing the valve against the seat. (1) If blue does not appear 360° around the valve face, replace the valve. (2) If blue does not appear 360° around the valve seat, resurface the seat.
  5. 5
    Measure the seat contact width.
Line drawing of a valve head cross-section with the contact band labelled SEAT CONTACT WIDTH.
  6. 6
Verify that the valve seating position is at the center of the valve face. (1) If the seating position is too high, correct the valve seat with a 75° cutter. (2) If the seating position is too low, correct the valve seat with a 45° cutter.
Two cross-section line drawings of the valve seat geometry for IN (left) and EX (right), showing seat contact width 0.8-1.4 mm {0.032-0.055 in}, the 45° seat angle, and seat diameters 28.1 mm {1.11 in} for intake and 22.7 mm {0.89 in} for exhaust.
  7. 7
Seat the valve to the valve seat by using lapping compound.
