Valve Seal (continued)

    Slide the valve seal onto the valve guide with the SST.
    The intake and exhaust valve seals are different as shown.

    Set the SST against the valve seal.
    Using a hammer will damage the valve seal.
  3. 4
    Using the SST, press the valve seal on by hand until the SST contacts the cylinder head.
    Pressing the valve seal onto the valve guide by hand using SST 49 L012 001 and 49 L012 002 over the cylinder head.

Valve and Valve Spring

  1. 1
    Install the lower spring seat.
    Valve and valve spring assembly order on the cylinder head, with numbered callouts: (1) lower spring seat, (2) valve, (3) valve spring (closer pitch toward head), (4) upper spring seat.

    Install the valve.
  3. 3
    Install the spring with the closer pitch toward the cylinder head.
  4. 4
    Install the upper spring seat.
  5. 5
    Compress the valve spring with the SST, and install the valve keepers.
    Compressing the valve spring with SST valve-spring compressor 49 0636 100B and adapter 49 B012 0A2 to install the valve keepers.

    Remove the SST.
  7. 7
    Tap the end of the valve stem lightly two or three times with a plastic hammer to verify that the keepers are fully seated.

Cylinder Head

  1. 1
    Measure the amount of oil control plug projection from the deck of the cylinder block.
  2. 2
    Apply clean engine oil to new O-rings and install them to the oil control plugs.
