MAGNETIC CLUTCH

Disassembly / Assembly

  1. 1
Disassemble in the order as shown in the figure.
Exploded view of the magnetic clutch assembly, left to right: pressure plate retaining bolt (15 N·m), pressure plate (1), shim (2), snap ring (3), rotor pulley (4), and stator (5). Balloon callouts 1-5 identify each part; tightening torque 15 {1.5, 11} marked on the bolt.
  2. 2
Assemble in the reverse order of disassembly.

Assembly note

Pressure plate

  1. 1
Measure the clearance between the pressure plate and the rotor pulley. (1) Set the A/C compressor on a level block. (2) Fix a dial gauge on a magnetic base and set the measuring probe on the pressure plate surface. (3) Alternately apply and remove battery positive voltage as shown in the figure. The clearance is the difference in the dial gauge readings. (4) Compare the measured clearance with the specified clearance below.
Pressure plate clearance measurement setup. A dial gauge on a magnetic base has its measuring probe set on the pressure plate surface; the A/C compressor sits on a level block. Labels: MEASURING PROBE, DIAL GAUGE, MAGNETIC BASE, LEVEL BLOCK.
  2. 2
If not as specified, install shims to adjust the clearance.
Line drawing of the rotor pulley/clutch on the compressor with the shim and pressure plate shown exploded above, illustrating shim installation to adjust clearance.

Inspection

Stator

  1. 1
Set the ohmmeter to the × 1,000Ω range.
Stator continuity check: an ohmmeter is connected between the stator terminal and the A/C compressor body to verify continuity.
  2. 2
Verify that there is continuity between the stator terminal and the A/C compressor body.
  3. 3
If there is no continuity, replace the stator.
