STARTING SYSTEM — STARTER Inspection (Magnetic switch, Brush and brush holder)

G-40prose procedure

Brush spring force differs by engine and transaxle (B6 DOHC, K8 DOHC MTX, K8 DOHC ATX), with cold-area (*1) alternates for K8 DOHC MTX.

Inspection

Magnetic switch

  1. 1
Continuity (Terminal S–Terminal M): Check for continuity between terminals S and M. Replace the magnetic switch if there is no continuity.
Hand using an ohmmeter to check continuity between terminals S and M on the magnetic switch.
  2. 2
Continuity (Terminal S–Body): Check for continuity between terminal S and the body. Replace the magnetic switch if there is no continuity.
Hand using an ohmmeter to check continuity between terminal S and the magnetic switch body.
  3. 3
Grounding: Check continuity between terminals M and B. Replace the magnetic switch if there is continuity.
Hand using an ohmmeter to check continuity (grounding) between terminals M and B on the magnetic switch.

Brush and brush holder

  1. 1
Check continuity between each insulated brush and the plate. Replace the brush holder if there is continuity.
Hand using an ohmmeter to check continuity between each insulated brush and the brush holder plate.
  2. 2
Measure the brush spring force with a spring balance.
Measuring the brush spring force with a spring balance hooked onto the brush spring. Labels: BRUSH SPRING, BRUSH.
  3. 3
Replace the spring if not as specified.
