STARTING SYSTEM — STARTER Adjustment of pinion gap, No load test, Disassembly / Assembly

G-37prose procedure

No-load test specs differ by engine/transaxle: B6 DOHC, K8 DOHC (MTX), K8 DOHC (ATX). Disassembly exploded view is for K8 DOHC (MTX).

Adjustment of pinion gap

  1. 1
Disconnect the wiring from terminal M.
  2. 2
When the battery is connected between terminal S and the starter body, the pinion will be ejected and then stop. Measure the clearance (pinion gap) between the pinion and the stopper.
Applying power continuously for more than 10 seconds will damage the starter.
Close-up of the starter pinion ejected from the drive housing, with arrows indicating the pinion gap (clearance between the pinion and the stopper) to be measured.
  3. 3
If the pinion gap is not within the specification, make adjustment by increasing or decreasing the number of washers between the magnetic switch and the drive housing. (The gap becomes smaller as the number of washers is increased.)

0.5-2.0mm {0.020-0.078 in}

No load test

  1. 1
    Connect the circuit as shown.
No-load test wiring schematic. Starter connected to a battery through a SWITCH, with an ammeter (A) in series and a voltmeter (V) across the starter. Starter terminals labeled B, S, M.
  2. 2
Measure voltage, current, and speed as shown.

Disassembly / Assembly

  1. 1
Disassemble in the order shown in the figure, referring to Disassembly Note.
    Exploded view of the K8 DOHC (MTX) starter disassembly. Callouts: magnetic switch (1), rear bracket (2), brush holder assembly (3), yoke (4), armature (5), internal gear (6), lever (7), front bracket (8), pinion gear and planetary gears (9), shaft (10). Torques: magnetic switch terminal 9.81-11.7 N·m {100-120 kgf-cm, 86.9-104 in-lbf}; 4.0-6.8 N·m {40-70 kgf-cm, 35-60 in-lbf}; 2.5-4.4 N·m {25-45 kgf-cm, 22-39 in-lbf}.
  2. 2
Inspect all parts and repair or replace as necessary.
  3. 3
Assemble in the reverse order of disassembly, referring to Assembly Note.
