STARTING SYSTEM — STARTER Inspection (Armature, Overrunning Clutch, Internal/Planetary Gears)

G-42prose procedure

Commutator runout maximum and segment groove depth differ between B6-DOHC and K8-DOHC; commutator minimum diameter differs across B6 DOHC, K8 DOHC (MTX), K8 DOHC (ATX). Internal/planetary gear inspection applies to K8 DOHC MTX.

Armature (continued)

  1. 3
Place the armature on V-blocks, and measure the runout with a dial indicator. If the runout exceeds the maximum, repair it with a lathe or replace the armature.
Armature placed on V-blocks with a dial indicator measuring commutator runout.
  2. 4
Replace the armature if the outer diameter of the commutator is almost at or less than the minimum.
Vernier caliper measuring the outer diameter of the commutator.
  3. 5
If the commutator surface is dirty, wipe it with a cloth; if it is rough, repair it with a lathe or fine sandpaper.
  4. 6
Measure the segment groove depth. If the depth of the mold between segments is almost at or less than the minimum, undercut the grooves to the standard depth.
Hand holding the armature; inset diagram shows measuring the segment (mica) groove depth between commutator segments.

Overrunning Clutch

Turn the pinion shaft by hand and hold the overrunning clutch. Replace the overrunning clutch if the pinion turns in both directions or in neither direction.

Internal Gear and Planetary Gears (K8 DOHC MTX)

  1. 1
Internal gear: Check for wear or damage. Replace if necessary.
Internal gear (ring gear) and three planetary gears laid out, checked for wear or damage.
  2. 2
Planetary gears: Check for wear or damage. Replace if necessary.
