IGNITION SYSTEM — Ignition Timing Adjustment (K8 DOHC)

K8 DOHC ignition timing adjustment. ATX uses P range, MTX uses neutral.

IGNITION TIMING

Adjustment

  1. 1
    Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature and run it at idle (P range [ATX] or neutral [MTX]).
  2. 2
    Turn all electrical loads OFF.
  3. 3
    Turn the A/C switch OFF.
  4. 4
    Verify that the coolant fan does not operate.

K8 DOHC Ignition Timing

  1. 1
    Connect a tachometer to the data link connector terminal IG-. Connect a timing light as shown.

    Connect the data link connector terminals TEN and GND with a jumper wire.
    Data link connector with a jumper wire bridging the GND and TEN terminals.

    Check the idle speed.
    Specification: 550—950 rpm
  4. 4
    If necessary, adjust the idle speed. (Refer to section F2.)
  5. 5
    Check the ignition timing.
    Ignition timing: BTDC 9—11° (10 ± 1°)
    Crankshaft pulley and drive belt area with the timing indicator marked.
  6. 6
    If the ignition timing is not as specified, loosen the distributor lock bolts and turn the distributor to make the adjustment.
    Distributor with an arrow indicating rotation direction for adjustment; the lock bolts are identified.
  7. 7
    Tighten the distributor lock bolts to the specified torque.
    Tightening torque: 19—25 N·m {1.9—2.6 kgf·m, 14—18 ft·lbf}

    Disconnect a jumper wire.
  9. 9
    Check if the timing mark (yellow) on the crankshaft pulley and the mark on the timing belt cover are aligned.
    Ignition timing: BTDC 6—18°
