IGNITION SYSTEM

G-26prose procedure

Ignition coil inspection for B6 DOHC engine. Coil is integral with the distributor.

Inspection

Check the following points. If a problem is found, replace the spark plug.
• Damaged insulation • Worn electrodes • Carbon deposits (If cleaning is necessary, use a plug cleaner or a wire brush. Clean the upper insulator also.) • Damaged gasket • Burnt condition
Plug gap
1.0—1.1 mm {0.040—0.043 in}

IGNITION COIL

Inspection (B6 DOHC)

Primary coil winding

  1. 1
    Disconnect the 3-pin connector from the distributor.
  2. 2
    Use an ohmmeter and measure resistance of the primary coil winding.
    B6 DOHC: ohmmeter connected to the distributor 3-pin connector terminals A and B to measure primary coil winding resistance. Labeled 'B6 DOHC'; callouts A and B mark the measured terminals.
  3. 3
    If not within the specification, replace the distributor.
Specificationat 20°C {68°F}
0.49—0.73 Ω

Secondary coil winding

  1. 1
    Disconnect the 3-pin connector from the distributor.
  2. 2
    Remove the distributor cap.
  3. 3
    Use an ohmmeter and measure resistance of the secondary coil winding.
    B6 DOHC: ohmmeter connected to measure secondary coil winding resistance with the distributor cap removed; callout A marks the measured terminal, with an inset close-up of the connector. Labeled 'B6 DOHC'.
  4. 4
    If not within the specification, replace the distributor.
Specificationat 20°C {68°F}
20—31 kΩ

Replacement

  1. 1
    Replace the distributor. (Refer to page G-29.)
  2. 2
    Adjust the ignition timing. (Refer to page G-24.)
