Ignition coil inspection for K8 DOHC engine. Replacement note for K8 points to ignition timing on page G-23 (vs G-24 for B6).

Inspection (K8 DOHC)

Primary coil winding

  1. 1
    Disconnect the 3-pin connector from the distributor.
  2. 2
    Use an ohmmeter and measure resistance of the primary coil winding.
    K8 DOHC: ohmmeter connected to distributor terminals A and B to measure primary coil winding resistance. Labeled 'K8 DOHC'.
  3. 3
    If not within the specification, replace the distributor.
Specificationat 20°C {68°F}
0.49—0.73 Ω

Secondary coil winding

  1. 1
    Disconnect the 3-pin connector from the distributor.
  2. 2
    Remove the distributor cap.
  3. 3
    Use an ohmmeter and measure resistance of the secondary coil winding.
    K8 DOHC: ohmmeter connected to measure secondary coil winding resistance with the distributor cap removed; callout A marks the measured terminal with an inset close-up of the connector. Labeled 'K8 DOHC'.
  4. 4
    If not within the specification, replace the distributor.
Specificationat 20°C {68°F}
20—31 kΩ

Replacement

  1. 1
    Replace the distributor. (Refer to page G-29.)
  2. 2
    Adjust the ignition timing. (Refer to page G-23.)

Spark Test

Spark Test

  1. 1
    Disconnect the high-tension lead from a spark plug.
    Engine-bay view of the distributor and high-tension leads used for the distributor spark test.
  2. 2
    Hold the lead with insulated pliers 5—10 mm {0.20—0.39 in} from a ground.
  3. 3
    Crank the engine and verify that a strong blue spark is visible.
