CONVENTIONAL BRAKE SYSTEM — Brake Fluid / Brake Pedal

P-9prose procedure

BRAKE FLUID

Inspection — Leakage inspection

Depress the brake pedal several times, and inspect for leakage of the brake line system.

Brake Fluid Level — Leakage check

Verify that the fluid level in the reservoir is between the MAX and MIN lines on the reservoir. Add fluid if it is below MAX.

Replacement

  1. 1
Follow the procedure outlined in Air Bleeding. (Refer to page P-7.)
Hand using the SST flare-nut wrench (49 0259 770B) at a brake caliper bleeder, with an inset bottle catching expelled fluid, illustrating brake-fluid replacement by continued bleeding.
  2. 2
Continue bleeding and replacing the brake fluid until only clean fluid is expelled.
  3. 3
Fill the reservoir to the MAX level.

BRAKE PEDAL

Inspection (on-vehicle) — Brake pedal height

Verify that the distance from the center on the pedal pad to the floor mat is as specified.
Brake pedal height
193—196mm {7.598—7.717 in}

Adjustment

  1. 1
    Disconnect the brake switch connector.
Side view of the brake pedal assembly with the HEIGHT dimension marked from the pedal pad to the floor. Callouts: (A) brake switch, (B) lower part of pedal pad / floor reference, (C) locknut, (D) push rod adjusting nut.
  2. 2
Loosen locknut (B) and turn switch (A) until it does not contact the pedal.
  3. 3
Loosen locknut (D) and turn rod (C) to adjust the height of the brake pedal.
  4. 4
Tighten the brake switch until it contacts the pedal; then turn it an additional 1/2 turn. Tighten locknut (B) and (D).
