Differential — Assembly Notes / Backlash of Side Gear and Pinion Gear

Bearing (side opposite ring gear)

  1. 1
    Install the speedometer drive gear.
  2. 2
    Install the new bearing by using the SST.
    Installing the new bearing (side opposite ring gear) using the SST. A press handle drives a tubular installer down over the differential case shaft set on a stand.

Roll pin

Install the new roll pin as shown in the figure to hold the pinion shaft.

Backlash of Side Gear and Pinion Gear

Measure the backlash by the following procedure.

    Install the left and right drive shafts in the differential assembly.
    Backlash measurement setup. The differential assembly with left and right drive shafts installed is supported on V-blocks; a dial indicator is set against a pinion/side gear to measure backlash.

    Support the drive shafts on V-blocks as shown in the figure.
  3. 3
    Measure the backlash of both pinion gears.
  4. 4
    If not as specified, replace worn and damage parts.
