TRANSAXLE — Bearing preload (differential) and assembly notes
J2-39prose procedureDifferential bearing preload spec 0.5 N·m; add 0.15 mm to measured clearance for shim selection
Bearing preload (differential, continued)
- 14Turn the SST with a torque wrench. Adjust the SST (selector) with the SST (bars) until the specified preload is obtained.

- 15Measure the gap between A and B around the circumference of the SST (selector) by using a feeler gauge.

- 16Add 0.15 mm {0.006 in} to the measured clearance and select the combination of two shims closest in value to that measurement. Use no more than two shims. (Numbered '14' on page; sequence step.)
- 17Remove the transaxle case and the SSTs.
- 18Remove the selectors, the primary shaft assembly, and the differential.
- 19Remove the bearing races.

Example: 0.32 mm {0.013 in}. 0.32 mm {0.013 in} + 0.15 mm {0.006 in} = 0.47 mm {0.019 in}. Nearest shim (on thick side) to 0.47 mm {0.019 in} is 0.50 mm {0.020 in}.

Assembly note — Oil seal (differential)
Oil seal (differential)
- 1Using the SST and a hammer, tap the new oil seal in evenly until the SST contacts the transaxle case.

- 2Coat the lip of the oil seal with transaxle oil.
Bearing race (differential)
- 1Install the adjustment shim(s) to the differential case.

- 2Apply transaxle oil to the bearing race, and install it to the differential case by using a suitable pipe.
