TRANSAXLE — Bearing preload (differential) and assembly notes

J2-39prose procedure

Differential bearing preload spec 0.5 N·m; add 0.15 mm to measured clearance for shim selection

Bearing preload (differential, continued)

  1. 14
Turn the SST with a torque wrench. Adjust the SST (selector) with the SST (bars) until the specified preload is obtained.
Turning the SST selector with a torque wrench to obtain the specified preload. SST 49 F401 385 (bar) labeled.
  2. 15
Measure the gap between A and B around the circumference of the SST (selector) by using a feeler gauge.
Measuring the gap between points A and B around the circumference of the SST selector with a feeler gauge. Balloon callouts A (upper right) and B (lower right); SELECTOR labeled at bottom.
  3. 16
Add 0.15 mm {0.006 in} to the measured clearance and select the combination of two shims closest in value to that measurement. Use no more than two shims. (Numbered '14' on page; sequence step.)
  4. 17
Remove the transaxle case and the SSTs.
  5. 18
Remove the selectors, the primary shaft assembly, and the differential.
  6. 19
    Remove the bearing races.
Preload (differential)

Example: 0.32 mm {0.013 in}. 0.32 mm {0.013 in} + 0.15 mm {0.006 in} = 0.47 mm {0.019 in}. Nearest shim (on thick side) to 0.47 mm {0.019 in} is 0.50 mm {0.020 in}.

Assembly note — Oil seal (differential)

Oil seal (differential)

  1. 1
Using the SST and a hammer, tap the new oil seal in evenly until the SST contacts the transaxle case.
Tapping the new differential oil seal in with the SST and a hammer until the SST contacts the transaxle case. Tool 49 B001 795 labeled.
  2. 2
Coat the lip of the oil seal with transaxle oil.

Bearing race (differential)

  1. 1
Install the adjustment shim(s) to the differential case.
Installing the differential bearing race into the differential case using a suitable pipe and a hammer.
  2. 2
Apply transaxle oil to the bearing race, and install it to the differential case by using a suitable pipe.
