Preinspection

5th gear thrust clearance

  1. 1
    Measure the 5th gear thrust clearance by using a dial indicator.
    Illustration of measuring the 5th gear thrust clearance using a dial indicator mounted on the gear-shaft assembly. A hand steadies the gear while the dial-indicator plunger contacts the gear face.
  2. 2
    If the clearance exceeds the maximum, check the contact surfaces of 5th gear and the clutch hub. Replace worn or damaged parts.

Locknut

  1. 1
    Mount the transaxle on the SSTs.
    Illustration of the transaxle mounted on the SSTs (49 G019 0A0 holding fixture and 49 0107 680A handle/support) on a bench stand to loosen the locknuts.
