J2-51parts diagram

DIFFERENTIAL section disassembly/inspection/assembly.

Disassembly / Inspection / Assembly

  1. 1
Before disassembly, inspect the backlash of the side gears and pinion gears, referring to Preinspection.
  2. 2
Disassemble in the order shown in the figure, referring to Disassembly Note.
Exploded view of the differential assembly. Shows the ring gear and gear case (10) at center-right, the pinion shaft (2), pinion gears (3) and side gears (5) with thrust washers (4, 6), the roll pin (1), the speedometer drive gear (8), and the two side bearings (7 side opposite ring gear, 9 ring gear side). Balloon callouts 1-10 number the parts. Notes mark REPLACE, SST, and oil-application points on several items.
  3. 3
Inspect all parts and repair or replace as necessary.
  4. 4
Assemble in the reverse order of disassembly, referring to Assembly Note.
  5. 5
Measure the backlash after assembly, referring to Backlash of Side Gear and Pinion Gear.

Backlash of side gear and pinion gear

Measure the backlash by the following procedure.

Backlash of side gear and pinion gear

  1. 1
Install the left and right drive shafts in the differential assembly.
Drawing of the differential assembly with both left and right drive shafts installed and supported on V-blocks; a dial indicator is positioned to measure the backlash of the pinion gears.
  2. 2
Support the drive shafts on V-blocks as shown in the figure.
  3. 3
Measure the backlash of both pinion gears.
  4. 4
If not as specified, replace worn and damage parts.
Backlash (side gear and pinion gear)
0-0.1mm {0-0.004 in}
