K8 DOHC engine specific power steering oil pump.

Disassembly Note

Pulley

Pulley disassembly

  1. 1
    Secure the oil pump assembly in a vise with the SST and bolts.
    Oil pump assembly secured in a vise using SST 49 F032 301 (holding plate) and bolts, with the pulley facing up.
  2. 2
    Remove the locknut while holding the pulley by using a screw driver.
    Removing the pulley locknut with a wrench while holding the pulley with a screwdriver inserted to prevent rotation.

Inspection

Pump body

Check the front and rear pump bodies for cracking and other damage and for abnormal wear of the friction surface of the rotor. Replace the pump assembly if a problem is found.

Cam ring, rotor, vanes, side plate

Cam ring, rotor, vanes, side plate inspection

  1. 1
    Check the friction surface of the cam ring vanes for abnormal wear.
    Cam ring, rotor, vanes and side plate laid out for inspection: side plate (left), cam ring (center), and rotor with vanes (right).

    Check the friction surface of the side plate and the pump bodies for abnormal wear.
  3. 3
    Check the friction surface of the cam ring for abnormal wear.
  4. 4
    Check the clearance of the rotor and vanes.

  1. 1
    Check the control valve for cracking, damage, blockage, and abnormal wear.
    Control valve and spring shown separated: coil spring (top) above the control valve spool (bottom).
  2. 2
    Check the spring for damage.
