7. Plug assembly

  1. 1
    Use the SST to press in a new oil seal.
    Cross-section showing the SST 49 B032 315 pressing in a new oil seal with a flat plate against the bearing of the plug assembly.
  2. 2
    Press in by placing the flat plate against the bearing.
  3. 3
    Install the new O-ring.
    Caution: Apply grease to the O-ring, oil seal and bearing.

8. Locknut

  1. 1
    Temporarily install the tie rod on the tube side of the rack.
    Hand using a wrench to tighten the locknut on the pinion shaft after temporarily installing the tie rod on the tube side of the rack.
  2. 2
    Invert the housing and install the locknut on the pinion shaft. Turn it until the tie rod contacts the tube.
  3. 3
    Tighten the locknut.
Tightening torque (locknut)
392 - 481N·m

9. Housing cover

  1. 1
    Apply thread sealant to the housing cover threads.
    Installing the housing cover onto the rack with thread sealant applied to the housing cover threads.
  2. 2
    Install the housing cover.
  3. 3
    Stake between the rack housing and housing cover at two points with a center punch.
    Hand staking between the rack housing and housing cover with a center punch.
  4. 4
    Use the SST to tighten the plug assembly to the gear housing.
    Using SST 49 B032 306 with a wrench to tighten the plug assembly to the gear housing.
  5. 5
    Stake between the housing and plug assembly at one point with a center punch.
Tightening torque (housing cover)
392 - 481N·m
Tightening torque (plug assembly)
294 - 382N·m
