Engine speed sensing power steering rack — applies to power-steering equipped models.

Needle bearing oil seal

  1. 1
    Insert the SST so that it contacts the needle bearing.
    Line drawing of removing the needle bearing oil seal using two SST bars. Two black tool-number labels are visible on the figure: '49 G032 303' and '49 G032 302'. A hand holds the SST against the steering housing.

    Remove the oil seal and needle bearing out with the SST bar.

Seal ring, O-ring

Remove the seal ring and O-ring out of the steering rack with a flat-tipped screw driver.

Inspection

Steering rack

    Inspect for cracking, damage, and tooth wear, replace if necessary.
  2. 2
    Measure runout of the rack.
    Line drawing of the steering rack supported on two V-blocks for runout measurement with a dial gauge. Callout A points to one measurement point near the right end, callout B points to a measurement point near the left end.
  3. 3
    If not within specification, replace the rack.
Runout — Near point Amaximum
0.15mm {0.006 in}
Runout — Near point Bmaximum
0.20mm {0.008 in}

Assembly

1. Mounting bracket and rubber

  1. 1
    (1) Install the mounting rubber.
    Line drawing showing tapping the mounting bracket onto the steering rack housing with a plastic hammer during assembly.
  2. 2
    (2) Tap the mounting bracket on with a plastic hammer.

2. O-ring and seal ring

  1. 1
    (1) Apply ATF to a new O-ring and seal ring.
    Line drawing showing compressing the seal ring by hand to fit it into the groove of the steering rack.
  2. 2
    (2) Install the O-ring in the ring groove of the rack.
  3. 3
    (3) Install the seal ring in the groove of the rack.
  4. 4
    (4) Compress the seal ring by hand to fit it into the groove.
